Philadelphia – Drexel Field Hockey lost a back-and-forth game with Lehigh, 3-2, in non-conference action at Buckley Field. The teams exchanged goals with the Mountain Hawks scoring the game-winner at 67:24. The loss drops the Dragons to 6-11 while Lehigh improved to 5-11.
The first half provided Drexel with multiple opportunities as the Dragons earned six penalty corners as Lehigh earned none. The Dragons out shot the Mountain Hawks, 9-1, in the opening stanza but the one Lehigh shot came after Christy Smith drove down the right side and fired a shot at point blank range that beat Drexel goalie Colleen McAndrew (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) to register the only score of the first period.
The second half saw Drexel finally break through as junior Emily Horvat (Allentown, Pa./William Allen) scored her seventh goal of the season on a rebound from a Karie Walton (Spring City, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) shot off the Dragons' ninth penalty corner of the game. Horvat has 14 career goals and is now tied for 11th place in goals at Drexel. Exactly one minute after the Horvat goal, Lehigh's Jennifer Cochran carried the ball through several Drexel defenders in the arc and slipped a shot through the legs of McAndrew to regain the Mountain Hawks' one goal edge. Drexel freshman Jennifer Bolger (Berlin, N.J./Eastern Regional) found an equalizer as she picked up a loose ball in the arc and fired it into the cage to knot the score, 2-2. The game appeared to be headed to overtime when the Mountain Hawks earned a penalty corner. With less than three minutes remaining, Christy Smith fired a shot at the top of the arc that was saved by a diving McAndrew. The rebound ricocheted to Kara Zweizig who fired the game-winner.
For the game, the Dragons out shot Lehigh, 17-8, and earned 10 penalty corners to the Mountain Hawks' three. Lehigh goalie Stephanie Palmieri made five saves while McAndrew stopped one shot.
The Dragons will return to Buckley Field to take on Delaware in a Colonial Athletic Association match-up on Friday, Oct. 27. Game time is 4:00 p.m. Drexel will be honoring the seniors on this year's team with a pre-game ceremony.
